The True New Year Has Begun: Gate 41 and the Art of Imagining Forward

Dear Creative Soul,

Yesterday, 22nd of January, the Sun moved into Gate 41.1. And with this transit, the Human Design New Year has officially begun.

As I already mentioned in my January MUSEletter: If you spent December 31st making resolutions while champagne bubbles rose in your glass, you were actually standing in Gate 38, the gate of The Fighter, of struggle and opposition. This energy, beautiful as it is for perseverance and purpose, asks us to fight for what we believe in. Karen Curry Parker calls this gate The Visionary. But visioning in the midst of a fighting energy? It was never the right soil for planting dreams.

Now you stand on different ground.

Gate 41 is the only initiating codon in our entire genetic structure. Ra Uru Hu taught that this gate literally begins everything. In the genetic code, there is only one start codon, and it corresponds to this gate. The 41st hexagram is the trigger that brought humanity into the evolutionary stage we inhabit now. Every new human experience, every evolutionary leap, every artistic breakthrough begins here, in the contracted potential of this pressure gate in the Root Center.

In Quantum Human Design, Karen Curry Parker names this gate Imagination. The traditional I Ching calls it Decrease. Both names hold truth, for there is a sacred paradox at work here: the most expansive human potential lives within the most contracted energy.

The Chinese image Ra often referenced was that of the gardener who cuts back the garden in winter. Nothing is lost by this pruning. Every twig, every leaf, every flower that plant could ever become remains contracted within it, held as potential. This is the nature of Gate 41: an enormous garden of possible feelings, fantasies, and experiences, all waiting to unfold one at a time.

The Mechanics of Human Hunger

What makes us different from our animal kin? Ra would say it is this: animals have one hunger, the predatory hunger for survival. Humans carry a second hunger, deeper and stranger, the hunger for experience itself. Why go to Mars? Just to see what the rocks look like. Why cross an ocean to discover new lands? Just to see what lies on the other side.

This is the fuel of Gate 41: the pressure to feel, to experience, to discover. It is also the gate of Fantasy, the ability to imagine the feeling before we have it. Every creative act begins here, in the capacity to fantasize something that does not yet exist and to hold that vision with enough focus that it eventually seeks manifestation through Gate 30.

GATE 41

The Six Lines of Gate 41: A Journey Through Imagination

LINE 1: BEING REASONABLE
The Focused Dreamer
January 22, 2026

The foundation of this gate teaches us something counterintuitive: you cannot have all your fantasies at once. The first line looks inward, seeking to understand the essential nature of what fantasy even is. Children with this line want desperately to know the difference between what is real and what is imagined.

Neptune exalted here gives the imagination to make the very best out of very little. One focused feeling can take you all the way. The mercurial side brings a tendency to assume capability, leading to strain. The trap is believing that because you can fantasize something, you can automatically do it.

As Ra put it: “I can fantasize making love to Martians. But I will not be able to do it.”

For the artist: Choose one creative vision. Hold it. Let the rest wait. Your power lies in focused dreaming, in the discipline of one fantasy at a time.

LINE 2: CAUTION
The Careful Projector
January 23, 2026

The second line projects outward, announcing to the world: I carry the fuel to feel. Here humanism is tempered by pragmatism. The evolutionary process that began as individual now needs to become collective.

Saturn exalted brings a conservative nature that does not risk its own security while helping others. Mars in detriment reveals the immature tendency to project feelings outward without foundation, to declare fantasies without the depth to support them.

Already in this second line, there is a need for others. This is the most sexual of all streams in the Human Design system, and human experience was never meant to be solitary.

For the artist: Your creative visions want to include others. But be cautious about sharing too soon. The projection is strong here, but the foundation must still be built.

LINE 3: EFFICIENCY
The Experimental Alchemist
January 24, 2026

The third line brings trial and error into the realm of fantasy. In times of decrease, selfishness is justified. This sounds harsh until you understand its meaning: release all your energy into one feeling. Find out if it was a mistake. Learn. Move on.

Saturn exalted gives material ambition and the discipline to go at it alone. This is the energy that fuels personal creative ambition: “I want to taste that mushroom. I want to feel what that is like.” If the person drops dead, nobody else will try. But if they see God, the collective will follow.

The Moon in detriment brings the instinct to share, even when solo exploration would be more efficient. The detriment says: I cannot experience this alone. I must bring someone with me.

For the artist: Your creative process will involve mistakes, broken bonds, experiments that fail. This is the path. Efficiency means learning when to pour everything into a feeling and when to release it entirely.

LINE 4: CORRECTION
The Fixed Visionary
January 25, 2026

The fourth line brings fixedness to fantasy. Here we find survival of the fittest in the Darwinian sense. The unidirectional capacity of the fourth line serves this gate well: you are meant to be fixed on your feeling, holding back all this fuel while waiting for the potential to manifest.

Earth exalted gives grounding, security, the capacity to stay fixed on one fantasy for a very long time, even throughout an entire life. This fixedness guaranteed humanity would reach the top of the food chain.

Venus in detriment pulls focus toward relationships rather than correction. Weak associations become costly. The fantasy gets diluted because you cannot bear to lose the people around you.

For the artist: Your creative vision may be lifelong. The gift is your capacity to stay fixed on one great work, one great theme. The danger is letting relationships distract you from the correction your art demands.

LINE 5: AUTHORIZATION
The Projected Visionary
January 26, 2026

We have reached the fifth line, which Ra said represents the evolutionary stage humanity currently inhabits. We have given authority to experience itself. The 20th century brought more human experiences than the entire previous history of the planet. We go to space, we map genomes, we build virtual worlds. The fifth line carries this hunger for ever more experience.

The fifth line has projected onto it that it carries the feeling, the fantasy. Others assume this person will go along with their vision, that they share the same emotional frequency.

For the artist: Others see in you a kindred dreamer. They project their fantasies onto your creative work. Your authority comes from having lived the experiential way so deeply that your imagination inspires collective movement.

LINE 6: CONTAGION
The Transcendent Ending
January 27, 2026

The sixth line of Gate 41 carries within it something mysterious. Ra taught that when the great mutation comes, this entire stream from Gate 41 to Gate 35 will eventually disappear. The sixth line already begins this process of stepping back from the experiential way.

Children born with Uranus in 41.6 are the first generation whose abstract nature operates differently. They may not want the bicycle. They may not need the new experience. They are not repressed in the unhealthy sense. They carry a genetic capacity that is beginning to hold back the endless hunger for more.

The sixth line says: “The maximization of potential not only ends decrease but inevitably, such transcendence benefits others.”

For the artist: You may find yourself less driven by the need for new experiences and more focused on depth within what you have already gathered. Your creative transcendence becomes contagious, inspiring others toward their own completion.

Your True New Year Invitation

So here we stand in Gate 41.1, the beginning of beginnings. The Sun will move through all six lines over the coming days, and we are invited to move with it.

Rather than fighting for resolutions in Gate 38, let us imagine forward in Gate 41. What single creative feeling wants your focused attention this year? What fantasy has been waiting, contracted like a winter garden, for its season to begin?

The hunger for experience is the most human thing about us. But the wisdom of Gate 41 reminds us: one fantasy at a time. One focused feeling can take you all the way.

Welcome to the true New Year.
