The Beginners Series III
From your birth time to the bodygraph
The two moments, the planets, the wheel of sixty-four,
and the neutrino stream behind it all
Two Moments, Not One
The earlier parts of this series looked at what a chart shows, your Type, your Strategy, your Authority, and the open and defined centres. This part looks at where the chart comes from in the first place, how a birth time turns into a bodygraph. It is more technical than the rest, but you do not need any of it to live your design. A computer does the math in a second. It is just good to know what the picture is built from.
The first surprise is that a chart is not made from a single moment. It draws on two. One is the moment you were born, the time you took your first breath. The other is a moment about three months earlier, while you were still in the womb. Human Design calls the first one the Personality and the second one the Design.
The Personality is the conscious you, the part you recognize as yourself, and in the chart it is printed in black. The Design is the unconscious you, the body and its inheritance, the part that runs underneath without your noticing, and it is printed in red. Most charts show both sets of numbers side by side, red on the left and black on the right.
The Design moment is not random. It is set at the point where the Sun had moved exactly eighty-eight degrees back along its path, which works out to about eighty-eight days before birth, a little under three months. In Ra Uru Hu’s teaching, this is when the body’s nine centres are built in the womb, and it carries your deepest genetic inheritance. The birth moment, by contrast, is when the conscious personality arrives with the first breath.
Where the Planets Were: The Ephemeris
For each of those two moments, the chart needs to know where the planets were in the sky. This comes from an ephemeris, which is simply a table or program of planetary positions for any date and time. It is the same astronomy that astronomers and astrologers use. Human Design adds no special star data of its own. It just reads the sky.
Thirteen bodies are used. The Sun and the Earth, which always sit exactly opposite each other. The Moon. The North and South Nodes of the Moon, also opposite each other. Then Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. That is thirteen positions for the birth moment and thirteen for the design moment, which gives twenty-six in total. These twenty-six are what fill in the two columns of numbers on a chart.
Each position is just a point on the great circle of the zodiac, measured in degrees. The next step is to translate those degrees into the language of Human Design.
The Wheel of Sixty-Four: From Zodiac to Gates
Human Design lays the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching around the same circle the planets move through. The circle has three hundred and sixty degrees, and sixty-four gates share it evenly, so each gate takes up an equal slice of about five and a half degrees (5.625, to be exact). Wherever a planet sits, it lands inside one of those slices, and that gate switches on.
Each gate is divided again into six smaller parts called lines, so there are three hundred and eighty-four lines in all. Below the lines there is even finer detail, called colour, tone, and base, used for deeper readings. For a beginner, the gate and the line are enough. A planet at a certain degree gives you a gate and a line, written as a number and a point, like forty-three point two.
So each of the twenty-six positions becomes a gate and a line. The Sun in the Personality might land in one gate, the Moon in another, Saturn in another, and so on, twice over, once for the birth chart and once for the design chart. This long list of activated gates is the raw material of the bodygraph.
Building the Bodygraph
Now the picture comes together. Each activated gate lights up its spot on the chart. The gates sit at the edges of the nine centres, and they are joined in pairs by channels. When both gates of a channel are switched on, by any of the twenty-six positions, the channel is complete, and the two centres it joins fill in with colour. This is how a centre becomes defined.
From that pattern, everything else follows. Which centres are coloured and which are white gives you your Type and your Authority, as the earlier booklets described. The lines of the Sun in the two charts give you your Profile. The Sun and Earth gates in both charts give you your Incarnation Cross, a picture of your life’s larger theme. All of it grows out of the same twenty-six positions, sorted into gates, channels, and centres.
This is why two people born minutes apart can have different charts. A small change in time can move a planet into the next line or the next gate. A channel completes or does not, and the whole shape shifts. It is also why the birth time matters so much.
The Neutrino Stream: Ra’s Explanation
All of this explains how the chart is drawn. It does not explain why the position of distant planets would have anything to do with you. For that, Ra Uru Hu pointed to the neutrino.
Neutrinos are real. They are tiny particles that pour out of the Sun and the stars in enormous numbers and stream through everything, including the planets, the Earth, and your body, almost without stopping. Trillions pass through you every second. Ra’s idea was that as this stream passes through the planets on its way to you, it picks up information about them, and that this is what imprints you at birth and in the womb. The planets act like filters in the stream, and you are printed by what passes through.
In this picture, the design is imprinted about eighty-eight days before birth, as the stream helps build the nine centres of the body. The personality is imprinted at the first breath, when the conscious self arrives. Two imprints, one for the body and one for the personality, are what the red and black numbers record.
It is worth being honest about which part of this is settled science. Neutrinos exist, they stream through us, and they were shown to carry a tiny amount of mass, confirmed by a Nobel Prize in 2015. Ra spoke of their mass years before that was widely accepted, which people in Human Design often point to. The further claim, that neutrinos carry personal information from the planets and imprint who you are, is Ra’s own theory and not part of mainstream physics. You can hold it as the story Human Design tells about its own mechanism, and take from it what proves useful.
What the Calculation Gives You
So a chart is built in a few clear steps. Two moments are chosen, your birth and the design point about three months before. An ephemeris gives the positions of thirteen bodies at each moment, twenty-six in all. Those positions are mapped onto the wheel of sixty-four gates and their lines. The activated gates complete channels, the channels define centres, and from that come your Type, Authority, Profile, and Cross. Ra’s neutrino stream is the explanation he gave for why those positions land on you at all.
None of this is something you have to do by hand. Software runs the whole calculation the moment you enter a birth date, time, and place. The accuracy depends most on the birth time, so the more exact that is, the more reliable the chart.
What matters in the end is not the math but what it reveals, a simple map of how you are built. The calculation is just how the map gets drawn. Living it is the part that is yours.
Two moments, twenty-six positions, sixty-four gates.
From that, a picture of how you are made.
